Yamaha trim won't hold-again-not cool

My 2002 Yamaha 115 4-stroke motor trim started creeping down in 2005. I took it to dealer who said the hydraulic unit "had some trash in it", and cleaned it out. This is a boat that had less than 20 hours. It now makes a creaky noise when I adjust the motor prior to launch and won't hold during running and the trim gauge has quit working too. The last time I was out, I had to constantly keep working the trim up button while running as the motor kept dropping.
Does anyone have an idea about this issue?

If you're gonna work on that motor you should have a manual. In there you will find the proper procedure for bleeding the trim cylinder. It could be o rings, valve body or several things. The Yamaha unit is very robust and not prone to problems.

Re: Yamaha trim won't hold-again-not cool

I was suprised that this low hour boat motor had trim problems; even more puzzled when the tech said the hydraulic trim unit had trash in it. How can a closed unit get trash in it? The next time I took it out, the trim gauge wouldn't work, and the trim has to be constantly adjusted while running because the motor keeps dropping down. I can buy a manual, but I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem with this motor within a short time.

unfortunatly Yamaha did not build nor design that trim unit.
its a Showa setup that was/is also used by BRP merc and a few others.
that creak means its past time to grease the tips of the trim pins and the wear pads.
the trim guage will either be the sender is stuck or the cam is broke,if its a broken cam mke sure the new AL cam is used not the old plastic cam.
guidelines for leakdown on a showa unit.
up main valve (lower chamber check valve)
manual release valve
trim piston o rings(or a bore is scored)
free piston leaking

Thanks, rodbolt. The creaky sound I should have better described as screechy, gurgling. As far as I can tell, no fluid is leaking around unit.
