Yamaha trim sender swap

I just bought a boat with a 1998 Yamaha Saltwater Series 200 on it. I'm going to replace the gauges in the near future and have found that my choices are very limited because Yamaha changed trim sender resistance specs in 2001.

Will a trim sender from a newer engine physically fit my engine so that I can use a current spec trim gauge?

If the updated sensor works then you will have a wiring issue. Why not just get the original sender so that it will be plug and play with the appropriate gauge? Or are you bound and determined to be your own engineer?

Oh, you might want to state the full model identity of your motor. Saltwater Series is not it.

I AM an engineer (electrical) and am very capable of handling boat wiring.

Anyway, I think you misunderstood my intentions. All the gauges are currently working, but they're in pretty bad shape so I want to replace them all with new ones. The selection of gauges which are available with a pre-2001 trim gauge is very limited, so if at all possible I'd like to convert the trim sender to a new spec unit. If I can find a newer trim sending unit that physically fits I'll be able to make it work.

The engine model is S200TXRW.

The trouble with engineers is that in times of stress they are apt to blurt out the truth.

Yamaha changed from a three wire sender (potentiometer) to a two wire sender (variable resistor) in 2001.

The same clamp bracket/tilt tube to which your three wire sender is used is also used on a 2004 Z200TXRC model that uses a two wire sender. I say this because it leads me to believe that the two wire sender will mount on your motor with no modifications being required.

The two wire sender uses two electrical leads. Imagine that. One black and one pink. Black is ground and pink is the colour that will connect to the sender input lead on a trim gauge.
