Yamaha trim question?

1995 Yamaha 90. When I trim it up it slowly goes down to where it was previously. After a few tries it finally stays put! Someone told me it could be low on trim fluid but I never seen a leak? Any opinions?

Checck the fluid, it sounds like there might be air in the system. Most trims self bleed out the air after a few cycles.

Do I check the fluid with the engine all the way up? (full tilt)

You should check the manual, but probably down this is when the reesvoir is full if you fill it with the leg up it might overfill when the comes down :)

Re: Yamaha trim question?

I have 200's, but they say to trim all the way up. engage the up lock, and then let sit for 5 minutes before removing plug and checking.

If you have to rebuild, a word of caution. Unless you are really good mechanically, let a qualified mechanic do the job. The rebuild kit has an amazing number of seals, wipers, springs, and check valves. It might even be cheaper to buy a new tt unit and install yourself - worth investigating repair vs. new. Hopefully its just low on fluid.

the main valves are bad for getting clogged. Try grabbing the leg and lifting and pushing down several times as hard as you can. This can purge them The manual valves are removeable without pulling the unit down. Get a manual....it will show which valve is which...

Re: Yamaha trim question?

I'll have to buy a manual then. Can anyone recomend a good one?
Also where would I be able to buy a rebuilt kit, if I neede it?
I've rebuilt carbs. before and have alot of patience so I think I might be able to pull it off, but let's hope it does not come to that!
Should I use the yamaha T&T oil, or just any T&T oil?
Thanks for your time!

Re: Yamaha trim question?

Waterrazor,
I purchased the factory Service Manual for my 1989 90 hp from my local dealer for $58 Can.
It is very good and gives a lot of info on the trim system.

This is how it says to check the P.T.T. fluid:
1) Tilt-up the motor and lock it with the tilt lock lever
2) Remove the fluid-level plug to check the fluid level. (with the motor tilted-up, the fluid level should be immediately below the fluid level hole.)

The manual recommends Automatic Transmission Fluid, either ATF Type F or Dexron from any decent manufacture.

Should you need to rebuild you would need the following special tools.
To remove the cylinder ends (90890-06288 & 90890-06222)
Seat installer (90890-06188)

Hope this helps

Re: Yamaha trim question?

I've got a 1997 70hp Yamaha that has the same problem. raising the motor to full height using electric tilt then releasing the tilt screw lets the motor drop back down by itself. tighten the screw and electrically tilt the motor back up and repeat the procedeure a few times, this is supposed to bleed the system.
i have had some success is this way, but the cure has not been long term. Must be a common problem with Yamahas. Schematics advice sounds good I will have to try it.
