Yamaha to Mercruiser drive swap???

Why do you have to change the motor as well as all other parts to make this swap? Is the block and crank drilled or cast differently than the Merc.? Is the Yamaha 5.7 an altered Chevy like the Merc.? If so will the Merc. parts bolt onto the back of this engine to make a hybrid? As I have read in other posts this is apparently not possible, but I was just curious why not. One other question while I am at it....Could some type of adapters be made to make this swap possible (within reason of course)?

I have not personally done the swap. But call this number 850-234-0854 and ask for Ken. He has done several and can answer your questions.

The block itself is the same, but all the accessories for the engine are different. Different coupler, bellhousing, different exhaust manifolds and risers to match up with the Y pipe going to the Merc transom shield. <br />If Alpha, there is also a shift mechanism inside bolted to the engine. The ignition on the Mercruisers are also setup to operate the shift interrupt system.

Re: Yamaha to Mercruiser drive swap???

I can get a 1995 Celebrity with a Yamaha drive that keeps throwing bearings and was altered the last time to make a non oem bearing fit. The motor is fine, and I can get my hands on a drive with exhaust manifolds, horn, couplers, bellhousing, transom plate, etc., etc. from a guy that changed out a small block/alpha to a 496/bravo. The motor is gone, but all the external marine equipment is still in a loft in his shop. IF I can get the boat cheap and the drive cheap and the drive swap will work with out to much headache, I may get myself a winter project (a lot of ifs huh). Before I layed out any cash, I thought I would ask you guys for input since you have vastly more boating smarts than I. I appreciate the replies already submitted and look forward to any other input or discusions. THANKS GUYS (AND GALS)
