How do I check for proper levels in my 87 70hp? Sunday I tilted it all the way up in Lake Kissimmee t clean off some grass. It would not tilt back down as normal. I opened the fill cap hoping for it to bleed out letting the motor tilt down. This did not work. Finally while holding thetilt button for what I felt was toolong, the motor did tilt back down. I would like to know of any emergency method of lowering the motor as I've seen on older mercs.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Yamaha Tilt & Trim

Did you ever receive a reply ----

Here is my problem sounds like yours

I tried to go out yestreday and could not get my motor to trim down. The motor trimed up once and would not trim down. There is a clicking noise in the engine (solenoid I think). To manually put the engine down I needed to releive pressure by using the relief screw. A few weeks back I noticed a leak on the floor, looked like tranny fluid could not find a leak, it only "leaked" once. I checked the fluid today and it looks fine but I am not sure if I checked it correctly. There is a screw in the housing between the 2 pistons. I open the screw and fluid came out. Not sure if this was the fill or drain screw. Could not find anything else.
Then in the afternoon I took the boat out in a local canal (not venturing far from the dock, Towing is expensive) and tried the trim while the motor was running. The trim motor spun but did not lift the engine. So now it could be electrical or low on fluid or something else??? Not sure what I have here but first I would like to bleed the system and try again.. How do you bleed the system to change all the fluid..Any help....

Probably need to take it in but want to check basics first.

Also I live in North Broward any good repair shops recommended???

Re: Yamaha Tilt & Trim

I'm not sure if they are the same but i have a 97 Yam 70hp. The release screw is on the right hand side of the outboard bracket, mine has a hole with a small arrow with the screw inside this. To get rid of air you have to electrically tilt motor all the way up then loosen release screw on the side to let motor fall back down, tighten screw and electrically tilt up. This can be repeated a few times to bleed out air. the screw in the middle of the pistons is the one where you fill with fluid when motor is tilted up. Good luck!
