Hello to all. I am hoping to get some help here and as it looks it is the right place to be. I have a 1992 85 h.p. Yamaha outboard. I am having to replace the trim motor. salt water finally had it for dinner! Question is How do I remove the assembly from the mounting brackets. It appears that I need to spread the mounting brackets a bit for it to come all the way out but am not sure how to go about it. I have a port-a-power to jack it open a little bit, but is the steering tube threaded all the way through to keep me from separating the brackets? One bolt snapped really easy and you know it had to be the one in the back so I couldn't get to it without removing the whole assembly. any guidance on how to completely remove the whole assembly would be greatly appreciated. It is close to coming out but needs just that little bit more room to remove.
Just in case, the model number is C85TLRQ
Thanks very much in advance

I do not think the tube is threaded except right on the ends.
You probably need to just move one bracket.
Have you pulled the nuts off one end of the tube and removed the bolts holding bracket to the boat

I think you're right. I believe you can unscrew the tube for there are two recessed nuts on each end. I am going to try to unscrew the tube and get just enough play or room to get the assembly out. I just found out from another source exactly what you have said here. Thanks for your fast response. I have removed mounting brackets before on a Johnson engine but has been a long time and simply forgot how to do it. I hope that is the case anyway. will respond back and let you know how it goes. thanks again.

Re: Yamaha tilt and trim

Thanks 99yam40. It turned out the whole unit came out without having to loosen the tube. It just took a little wiggling and twisting and light prying at the bottom. Found a lot of trash from the old motor in the reservoir unit. Have another question. Do you know which is the best way to put the fluid back in, whether I should fill up to where it meets the bottom of the motor before I install the new motor or just wait till I get it all back together and fill it through the fill plug the original way .Or does anyone know the best way to go about this. I lost a lot of fluid when the old motor came off and of course when I took the whole unit out so I could extract the broken mounting bolt. I figured I would go ahead and fill it back to where the motor meets the reservoir and then top it off through the fill plug to get rid of any air. I'm not sure. Should I just fill it through the fill plug and bleed it as normal? Thanks for any responses

I believe either way will work, just make sure you keep all the trash out as it will mess up valves and seals.
I think they fill rams and things as they are being installed to keep from having to work all that much air out.

My C40 had a foam filter where the motor mounted to the pump and it just fell apart when I pulled the motor. I had to clean that all out and order a new one, but work fine now.

Re: Yamaha tilt and trim

Good luck with your new trim motor. After you get it all back together and working, try spraying your entire tilt/trim motor, pump, rams, everything with white Lithium Grease, sticks on there very well and keeps water out of the entire unit.
