I have a 2006 Yamaha 9.9 four stroke. The layout of my boat does not permit me to see the motor from the helm. I had a plastic bag or kelp cover the water intake while trolling and the motor heated up, it was undetected until I heard the motor reaction to running hot. To avoid the motor ever getting that hot again I want to instal a temp sender/gauge or water pressure gauge. The Yamaha 9.9 four stroke does not have a obvious spot for it. What is the best option? Not much water pressure in that small motor for a pressure sender? Maybe some kind of aftermarket surface mount temp sender or drill and tap something, if I knew the best local? Any tips would be appreciated

I have no experience with doing that, but usually the sensor is installed right near the thermostat housing (on the inlet side, not the exhaust side). On yours, it looks like there's a line that goes right into the thermostat housing via a pipe joint. That might be worth a shot.

One problem I can picture in my mind would be that inserting a sensor could change the water pressure in the system. So I would think about that going forward, because if the pressure gets too low, water might no longer reach the thermostat or the sensor. So in that case, not only would you cause overheating, but you still wouldn't know about it because the sensor wouldn't have any water surrounding it to take a temp reading from.

Good luck though.. sounds interesting.
