Yamaha Stern Drive; Where to start?

I was given ($500) a 5.7L V-8 Yamaha Stern Drive (W/ boat, ha ha!). I seem to understand the difficulty of owning this particular brand. With that said, the boat has been sitting for 3 years. The previous owner did not remove the gas, should I spray some carb cleaner, change oil, drain and refill with good gas and see what happens? or should I start by assuming the gas has varnished everything and start by rebuilding the carb? If so where is a good place to look for rebuild kit? It is a Rochester 4mv 4 bbl.
Thank ahead for any help.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard......

If it were Me,... I'd Gut it, selling off the Yamaha parts, piece by piece,...
And taking the Ca$h to buy a Merc or Volvo Replacement,... your choice,...
Then refitting it to the hull....

Otherwise,...
Treat this as everything is Questionable,+ Check Everything......
This Summerization thread gives you some Ideas as to what to look for...

Merc ran the Same Carb for many years,... You can probably find a Kit for it,..
Right here at iboats,... Click on engine parts above...

But Bondo, how's this poor Florida mechanic gonna feed the family if everyone starts junking them things? Might have to sign up for food stamps or that free cheese.
You would not believe the shipping business that we do on parts for them things.
