I have the dreaded 1990ish 4.3L Yamaha stern drive on a 20' Chapparal. I have two specific issues.
1. The drive is particularly difficult to shift into forward. I have the Clymer manual and have attempted to adjust the shift linkage. Smooth shifting into reverse, not so much into forward. I believe the problem may be in the lower shift cable, but am concerned about pulling the stern drive. Will it be that much of a challenge to find the necessary seals, etc. to re-install it? Will I even be able to locate the shift cable?
2. Only once have I been able to reach WOT. At about 3500 rpm The engine begins to surge in quick increments, almost like the prop is losing traction in the water. This surge is very mild, only about 100-200 RPM. If I attempt to give more gas, the engine seems to bog down. I have attempted to adjust the trim, no results. I have had the prop worked over, rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel filter and water separator. I am completely lost on this one. There is a little side to side play in the outdrive (steering), could this contribute? HELP!!
