I have a 1994 Monterey with a 5.0 Yamaha outdrive. While at the lake the boat overheated, found the issue to be the impeller which was in bad shape found pieces in the heat exchanger have flush it out and water is flowing before and after the pump, which on a Yamaha is a Sherwood pump located under the alt . I am still having issues with overheating but have only tested out of the lake, I talked to some people who have worked on Yamaha's outdrives to find out that it is not recommended to use a garden hose attachment while running the boat out of water, so I have found a large container and filled it with water and have been able to cover most of the lower unit, still over heating is there any one out there with Yamaha stern drive knowledge that could help me thanks....

You may use a flush attachment with garden hose but not a cheap on. Use a good flush like a Bravo flush and crank the water on full. The best way to tell what kind of condition your pump is in after installing a new impeller is to suck on one of the ports and see how much air bypasses the impeller. To check the seals, cover the other port with your hand while sucking. If you can't pull a vacuum, you got problems.
