I have a Yamaha 8hp - four stroke that I can't get started! There's fuel in the in-line filter, and I removed both spark plugs and were wet with fuel. I cleaned them off and still no start. Im wondering if its getting spark? Its a brand new motor. Any thoughs?

The lanyard is connected. I messed with it a few times. It has set all summer mounted on the boat. It's a 2006 model.

I don't think I am getting spark. The spark plugs showed fuel on them, so if thats the case the engine should fire if Im getting spark. Is my thinking right?

Re: Yamaha starting problem

I just recently upgraded a 2006 Yamaha 8hp to a 15hp, but I had issues originally starting the 8hp when it was brand new. I muddled my way through it but ended up getting consistent starts with the following suggestions from various forums:
1) premium gas 2) always use gas stabilizer 3) run the carb dry after use 4) crack the throttle halfway on start

I dropped the motor off at a local marina today and he mentioned that they have had a lot of issues with fuel. I am making note on all replys and thank you! Anyone else?

The marina called today(Wednesday) and said come get the motor, "We have it running"!!! The mechanic said when I set it on the side the carb filled up with oil! When laying the motor down, lay it on the tiller side! I learned an important lession!
