Yamaha Relief Update

Given the high level of interest in the last post I had a few weeks ago soliciting thoughts as to whether I could expect some relief from Yamaha on a 2000 200 with a blown cylinder a few months out of warranty, I figured I'd post an update.

I did go through my dealer rather than deal with Yamaha directly. They were the ones who originally told me Yamaha wouldn't do anything. The sales department said they would go to bat for me, and just informed me that Yamaha is going to give me a new powerhead. I'm still responsible for labor, which I think is reasonable.

The problem was a broken ring and I was told that the cause is anybody's guess but could be some kind of oil issue.

I am now talking to the dealer about trading in the repaired engine either for a new Yamaha 225 4-stroke or possibly even trading in the boat for another. So, everybody wins now that Yamaha is doing the right thing. The dealer wins because I'll probably be giving him some new business. Yamaha wins because now I'm less inclined to replace it with a Merc.

Thought you'd all be interested.

Re: Yamaha Relief Update

Zach, That's great news to here that you were taken care of by the dealer. Kinda renews your faith in them!! Maybe if you play it right, the dealer might be willing to forgo the Labor charge if you purchase a New Motor or Boat. Hope it all works out with your New Motor(Or Old One) and good luck.

Good job Zachdog. That is reasonable.

It's odd your dealer originally told you Yamaha wouldn't do anything....and now Yamaha is giving you a new powerhead at no cost. You must have somehow inclined your dealer to discuss it more with the factory as a defect....and the factory saw it your way. Hats off to all. The process works.

:D

Forktail: After they told me they wouldn't do anything I did ask them to go to bat for me, and I also dealt with the sales people at the dealer instead of the service people. I like the service guys but sales people in any business are usually more concerned about maintaining happy customers than service.

Yep, they'll send the dealer a reman engine from Hydo Tec and they will return the bad engine to them. Hydo Tec does the rebuilding for Yamaha. Owner pays for installation. Common practice. Sugar goes along way when trying to get help. Dealer just used one of his brownies points so be real nice to him. Maybe send the guys there a box of cookies for Christmas. You'd be surprised what the little things will get ya.

Zachdog,

Good for you. Looks like you found yourself a gem of a dealer. Stick with em'.

Cap't. Ken's, not kidding. You would be surprised how far something like that goes with the employess. Just show up one morning with a mess of donuts or something. :D
