Yamaha PRO50 Have to idle up to keep it running

I just recently bought a boat and I had it out for the first time over the weekend. The motor really ran good, except for one thing. To get it started we would have to idle up and then it would run but it would die if we tried to put the idle all the way down and put it in gear. What we did was idle up and then put it in gear as we put the idle all the way back down but we had to be quick about and usually took 2 or 3 times before we would get it. I don't know too much about these motors, but I was thinking it sounds like it needs a tune up. Anybody know if I am right or what it could be?? Thank you

Re: Yamaha PRO50 Have to idle up to keep it running

Maybe I should add some info
89' Yamaha pro50 2-stroke oil injected

runs fine when idled up but when all the way down will die
makes a "nails on a chalk board" yelp once or twice when you idle real low

only way to get it in gear is to push forward or backwards on the control at the same exact time you return the idle lever all the way down.

Any ideas of what this could be please comment.......

thanks

carbs need cleaning.
Sounds like a lean sneeze and the pilot jets/passages are plugged
