I just bought this boat and sometimes when I pull it from fwd to nutral it remains in gear and sometimes when I put it in reverse it makes the nasty sound of the drive dog not engaging with the reverse gear. is there an adjustment that I can do that will enable it to disengage from fwd better and go into rev. better. or is my reverse rounded off. I have searched and found nothing that fits this description. I have disasembled and replaced gears in the lower units of johnson and mercury's hopefully I do not have to do this again. one other thing if I really quickly jam it into reverse it will engage and work until I put it back down to where idle should be in reverse then it will disengage and make the awful racket. I do not have a book yet but plan to buy one shortly I have to order it. its a 1987 pro v 150 thanks

Sounds like the shifter cable needs adjusting or replaced. Be sure the out of gear idle is below 1000 rpms and do not try to ease it into gear.
