You guys are great! I have been having trouble starting my 1998 Yamaha 150 Vmax all season and the suggestions have bneen very enlightening. I have used the Yamaha additive, but maybe didn't understand how important it is to overall performance.

Reading the past postings has been very informative. Regarding oil, I thought the TCW3 standard was good enough to guarantee proper performance. I am now wondering if I made a gross error while trying to save a buck. Have I added to the carban build-up by using cheaper Walmart or Penzoil oil?

If so, what should I do now?

Re: Yamaha Oil Clarification

the TCW3 oil is fine for you outboard, Walmart, Penzoil or Yamaha brands are all basicly the same and did not add to the carbon problem. As for any carbon you have do a search on de-carbing and you will get step by step instructions how to do it come spring. It is part of the maintance of a 2 stroke :)

Re: Yamaha Oil Clarification

The TCWIII is only the low mark on the standard scale when producing oil which means there is good TCWIII and poor TCWIII. Oil sold by the different engine builders have additives that are suppose to enhance the running of their engines. Most OEM oils greatly exceed the spec's of TCWIII and usually why they cost more. Its just like your car calling for 30wt oil. There's cheap 30wt and there's better quality more expensive 30wt. I have in the past seen the X marts oil cause problems with the oil injection systems. In fact I use to keep an empty container of one brand that had in small print stating to strain the oil before pouring. Several years ago, I had a NOAA boat come into the shop and the oil had gelled in the oil tank. They were using a X mart oil and we never did figure out what caused the oil to gel. I tell my customers to try to stay away from the X mart brand oils unless they are premixing.
