I picked up a multi-function yamaha gauge on eBay for $250. But, as with all eBay items, you have to be careful.

Richard

Hi,
I did the same thing and then found that Yamaha bits are very expensive. The most necessary item in my opinion is a tacho. I found a digital tacho/hour meter made by Quicksilver (Mercury) from my serviceman for AS$50 that's about US$35. It is a two wire job, one to earth and the other to be wound around one of your spark plugs. It is easy to install, can be stuck onto your dash with double sided tape and then it's only a matter of running the wires and winding the sensor lead around the plug lead. The energy picked up from that powers the instrument and charges the battery. It works great!! Have a look around for that. Good luck from the land down under.

Reference my last, Mine is a two stroke. You will need to ensure that whatever you come up with suits a 4 stroke. With the wrong item you will only show 1/2 the actual rpm.

If you want the Yamaha digital gauges, you want the kit easygo0 mentioned above, the Yamaha p/n is 6YR-W0035-F0-00. You can also order it online from Central Florida Yamaha although it may take a week or two to get it if they don't have it in their immediate stock (yamahaoutboardparts.com).

That kit comes with the extra wiring harness for the trim/tilt and the oil pressure warning that runs from the engine to the remote and the gauges. Most of the wiring is just plug & play but you'll need to splice in the (usually) pink and black wires from your fuel tank sensor to the speedo unit. I'm assuming you've got a 10-wire 703 remote, if you do it's not a difficult install. You'll also need to set 3 small switches on the back of the tach unit for a 2 lead trim sensor/12 pole tach sender/4 stroke engine.

If the boat already has a pitot tube that runs from the dash to the outboard you can use that to connect to the speedo, but if it doesn't the kit includes a long length of tubing.

you guys are killing me. ya pay a premium price for one of the best designed engines then get all cheap and wiggy with rigging. next you will complain cause the trim gauge does not work or the alarm system does not function and it will all be due to substandard rigging. I see it on new boats on a daily basis. 90% of new engine problems I trace directly back to shoddy rigging and substandard parts.
if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.
good luck and keep posting

<sarcasm>
Sorry rodbolt, I didn't know the Yamaha digital gauge kit was "substandard", as you put it.
</sarcasm>

No. He's talking about aftermarket gauges. I had a customer bring his boat in last spring. He got a new boat and hung his motor on it. Rather than do the smart thing and install the Yamaha gauges he already had, he tried to connect the exitsing gauges. He didn't want empty holes on the dash from the smaller gauges. I spent a ton of time trying to figure it all out. Had to get a few different gauges, Finally got them functioning, but Man what a Pain!
