Hi,
I have a 2001 90HP 2 stroke 90TLRZ with the multi-function digital tach. I am new to Yamaha.

I ran the boat this weekend and it ran great, but on the Tach - the reading is a single blinking bar on the temp, nothing on oil, nothing on tilt. I am getting RPM readings, but I'm not sure they are correct.
There is plenty of water coming out of the "pee hole", the oil is full, and I used various levels of tilt/trim during the day out.

I appreciate your help,
Thanks
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

you should have bars for the tilt, no bars for the temp and a set or bars to indicate full oil.
if someone has changed tachs its possible the switch settings are inccorect.
could also be the trim sender is stuck.
may be time to have a dealer look at it, unless thats where ya got it.
can ya post a digital picture of the tach?

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

I bought the boat in a private sale.
It was repowered in 2001 supposedly by a local boat marina.

I did run the boat in Nov. when I bought it. but didnt know anthing about the tach, and didnt pay attention to it.

I read up on it a bit, on the Yamaha web site, and thus I sent this after going out this weekend.
The boat is in my yard. I will attach rabbit ears, run it, and take a picture of the tach.

Thank you
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

I just ran the engine at idle with rabbit ears,, and took pictures of the tach.
The tach did what appeared to be a system check, displayed an "88", a full bar for tilt, a single bar for heat, and a single bar for oil.
Then this cleared, the temp blinked on and off, the oil was blank, and the tilt stayed at 2 bars.
Water flowed through the pee hole at idle.
I have digital pix I will post.

Thanks
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

tell tale has absolutly nothing to do with tach function, check the dip switches.
does that tach have a mode and set button on the front ?
they are to blurry for me to tell.
to the trim bars move up and down as the engine is tilted ?
all the segments will self test at key on.
if set up correctly the tach oil should display 3 bars if the oil tank is over 1/3 full.
the temp should have no display until the overheat is triggered.
if the tach dip switches are set for 4 stroke the display will be inccorect. the 99 and older tachs had arrows and way way old just lights.
should be sw1 on,sw2 off, sw3 on.
sw1 selects two or 3 wire trim sender on is for a two wire sender, sw2 is for tach pulse selectionoff is for the 90's 12 pole altenator, sw3 is for 2 or 4 stroke select. if your tach is a 2000 or later you will see a small rubber plug on the back, the switches are under that plug.
sometime in the early 2000's all the tachs came shipped with the switches set for 2 wire,12pole and 4 stroke, if they are not reset as needed at installation they wont work correctly.

I know the motor year, what year was the tach manufactured.
if it has a mode select function its after o4 and may need an adapter.
by your model I can also tell its electric start with trim,20" transom and remote control.
what I cannot tell is the tach year.
do the trim bars move when the engine is tilted ?

The tach bars do not move when the trim is tilted.

I will look at the tach tomorrow to check if it has a Mode button

The boat was repowered with this tach in 2001

Thanks again
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

I just went out and checked the tach

There is NOT a Set or Mode button on this tach
It must be little "older"

I apologize for lack of details. The guy I bought this from did not keep/have any manuals or documentation

Thanks again
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

no worries, but by having bars it has switches.
sometimes you have to move them and reset them.
tilt the motor all the way up and see if the sender arm is moving freely.
its the arm on the inside of the port bracket, could be stbd but memory says port.

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

Hi,

Just came from giving this a try.

The plug was exactly where you said, as well as the dip switches. That's the good news. The bad news is I had to use a mirror to see the switches because the access is so tight under the console. It was hard to make out which one was which. I tried using the mirror, a light, and a sharpened pencil to change the switches, but how do these set? Do they slide, push in, up.
I am familiar with dip switches on a computer board, but I've never had to get access to ones up inside a "hole".
I loosened the bracket the tac is mounted with, and spun it around so I could get a little closer, but I felt like I was doing "
brain surget" with a light and mirror and some sort of instrument to re-set the switch.
I barely could put the plug back in.
Any tips on how to make this any easier??

Thanks much
Dwight

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

sometimes I have to remove the tach for access. its the same dip switches the computer boards use.
I use an ice pick or my small dental pick to move them as a pencil just does not fit.
did ya tilt the engine up and insure the sender arm is moving freely ?
they will stick occasionally.

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

unplug the connectors, remove the two 7mm nuts and withdraw it from the dash. if you have enough slack in the harness dont even unplug it.
its all color coded and plug and play, unless the flying monkeys got it.

Re: Yamaha Multi-Function Digital Tach question

Thanks Rodbolt,

As instructed, I removed the two 7mm nuts and pulled the tach from the dash. I had enough slack in the harness so I didn't unplug it.

Much easier to get to the switches. I made the changes, tested, and it's working properly.

I just find it unbelievable that the previous owner, ( I just bought this boat) after spending the money for a new 90hp Yamaha, 704 Control and the Multi-Funct. Tach never did anything about the tach not working correctly. He just drove around for four years with it wrong. Unbelievable.
