Yamaha Melt-Down

I have a 2005 yr model - 200HPDI Yamaha, and have had five lower unit/tuner replacements due to overheating. Yamaha says it's due to mud/sand forced into water pickup when beaching the boat. Lots of stories around the tackle shop of this from other Yamaha owners. Yet, Yamaha has no fix for this problem and other motors don't seem to have this problem. Is it just a "lemon" or is there something that I can do?

Re: Yamaha Melt-Down

My Yamaha 90HP eats lots of mud and sand duing beaching, fishing in shallows, etc., no problems so far......it shouldn't be that much of a problem, especially since the water intakes have those little plastic screens over them and the water pump can digest a good bit of foreign material. Your motor must have some other issues. Good Luck

If the exhaust tuner is getting so hot it requires replacement then it is not being cooled. You have a circulation problem in the engine and it is probably plugged with sand or mud. If the tell tale shows a good stream that is not an indicator that circulation within the engine is ok.

Are you saying that you had to replace the lower unit 5 times and had to pull the power head and replace the exhaust tuner 5 times too? All from overheating?

First indicator is a spun prop hub. Then you find lower unit is burned dry and damaged/seized. Yamaha replaced four times under warranty. Last time sent tech guy form Atlanta, who drilled out water passage oversize. Said that would fix the problem. Thirty hrs later - same problem. Insurance replaced last time. Looking for new boat/motor rig. NO MORE Yamahas.

How often did you check replace the lower unit lube and what kind of lube did you use?
How many hours did it take to reach this each time and over how many months?
Did they pull power head and replace the exhaust tuner also each time?

I have never heard of this before happening over and over.
Did it burn through the exhaust tuner first and then get the lower unit?
