Yamaha/mariner lower unit

I just bought a 1985 40hp Mariner, the lower unit is bad, the motor is made in japan and I think it is not compatible with Mercury but actually a Yamaha??? Is this correct and does anyone know where I can find a lower unit to fit???

You're right, it's a Yamaha. As to where to find one, I have no good suggestions except to check around with boat dealers in your area. Many keep the old junked motors around someplace for parts. You never know who has what, so it requires a lot of effort. Ebay might be another option, but not a likely one. Good luck.

Yes I have checked everywhere around where I live and all the way from Florida to Colorado up to Virginia. Well thanks for the confirmation on being a Yamaha!!

I have one Fed Ex broke the skeg on. There is enough left where a new one could be welded on. In good condition otherwise. You can reach me at neudecray@hotmail.com.
