Hey,
First, thanks to all the help so far!
I just bought a '93 bowrider with a Yamaha 4.3 engine and the Yamaha outdrive.(Playcraft 190BR)
I can't seem to find any kind of repair manual for this year...Help.
Is it similar enough to the mercruiser, or is it a different beast.
It has already been on the water this year. The guy said that over about 60% throttle it coughs and backfires(no power).
Also ,sometimes it won't shift all the way back to idle to go into reverse. When you turn the key off, and back on then it will. I don't have a clue!
Thank all of you for so much help thus far!
.......

Re: Yamaha I/O ????

sounds like its fuel starved and the cut out switch assy is not working. the shift cut allows the load to be momentarily removed from the propshaft so the clucth can release from the gear.
capt ken comes about periodically and has experience with them, I like to forget they made them.
however I still get tasked with the repairs on a few.

Sounds like someone not familiar with the systems have be attemting to work on it. First question, is it a EST or a YEMS model? This will determine which direction you have to travel to solve the problem grasshopper.

Oh yeah, they produced them in 89 and 90 but boat builders stockpiled them and installed them in boat up till 95.

look at the dist cap. if it has a square section with a 4/5 pin and a 2 pin connector its EST. its funny but I cannot picture the YEMS setup anymore :) :) .
means I am living right :)
the factory service manual covers both setups I believe.

Re: Yamaha I/O ????

EST has a distributor, YEMS has no distributor. YEMS has a big electronic box mounted just behind the carb. YEMS has digital gauges, EST doesn't.
If the black plastic cover is still mounted atop the carb, it'll say, YEMS.

Re: Yamaha I/O ????

Being I haven't looked at the Clymer manual, can't tell you how good it is. The Yamaha OEM manual isn't. Like Rodbolt said, sounds like fuel starvation but then I've seen folks time the engine without knowing you have to plug two wires together on the manifold and screw the timing up. Sounds like the shift switch is also not working or disconnected. Probably due to the lower cable getting stiff and they got tired of it killing the engine when they shifted. Look on the starboaard riser and find the shift plate, two black wired hanging down, check to see if they are plugged in. Least ya ain't far from me.

Re: Yamaha I/O ????

Gonna have to drive a bit further east for me. Did spend last weekend at Big Lagoon State park @ Perdio Key. Gulf Shores is starting to get back to normal after the huricanes but still has a ways to go.

Capt,
Itook her on the water Sat.
Would not plane w/ 4 people on board and ran about 2400rpm.
I will start with tune up stuff first, plugs, wires, filters, etc...
She seems to be running real rough.
The shifter feels like a cable or shift box problem... But i don't know.
I'm glad we went out, cause it let me feel her firsthand.
I will be in touch, you can bet!
Thanks so far...
Bo

Re: Yamaha I/O ????

Disconnect the shift cable back on the engine. The cable from the shifter, not the one going down to the lower unit. The shift arm should move forward and back with very little effort. DO NOT FORCE THE ARM, IT WILL BREAK EASILY. If it moves freely, then you may have a problem in the shifter but I doubt it. If its been a salt water boat and it shifts rough, its in the cable or shift fork.
Before you get too deep, check compression and stuff like that.
