I am in the process of purchasing a 2000 18' flats boat with a 2000 Yamaha VX150 (complete with 2 year factory warranty).
This is a great engine, but I have an opportunity to swap it for a new 2002 Yamaha HPDI 150 for an additional $3000 installed.

I am wondering if this steep price increase is worth it. The fuel economy is better with the HPDI I have been told, but I would like to know how much better it is. I would also like to know any more possible advantages or disadvantages of one motor over the other.

Re: Yamaha HPDI 150

I think it boils down to one being more fuel efficient and cleaner than the EFI but of course you also get oustanding performance on the throttle with the HPDI direct high pressure fuel injection. Test drive one, and perhaps give the FICHT engines a go as well.

I recently test drove a Princecraft 176 with an Evinrude Ficht 135 and that engine bolted the boat out of the water and on plane incredibly fast. We covered 52 miles of water at 4200 RPM or 40 MPH and burnt approx. 5 gallons of gas. How does that sound.

I say go with the HPDI,but take an extended warranty if its available, after all this is new technology.

------------------
Princecraft 164(2000)
Merc 90-4 stroke
Prop:Vengeance SS 16P
