I'm looking at purchasing a used (37 hours) 1998 Yamaha GP1200 for in the ballpark of $3,000.00. Its supposedly in great condition. The current owner is stepping up to a 3 seat 4 stroke Kawasaki.

Can anybody tell me if this is a good machine or good engine at a good price. I don't know much about waverunners. Although I'd rather have a 4 stroke, if the deal is right, I'll go with the 2 stroke. Ten Thousand for a Honda Aquatrax is a little too much.

Re: Yamaha GP1200 comments ???

The GP1200R or GP1200? The 1200R is a good machine overall, but it does have some issues that need addressed. First is the power valves. The design allows for the retaining pins to work loose, thus dropping the valve into the cylinder. There is aftermarket kits available for this fix, I believe around $20.00 and about 1 hour of your time. Second is you will need to seal the pump area. This will eliminate a lot of your cavitation that this torquey motor tends to develop. This too is an easy do it yourself fix that will take about an hour to do. You pull your intake grate, and your pump shoe off. Get a Pump plug kit (around $40.00) which will give you a bunch of rubber pieces that fit in the voids of the pump shoe, put it back together using silicone on all the edges. Not hard at all, and makes a world of difference! Third is it tends to want to porpoise, but most 2 seaters do. If you look at my post under PWC Durability, you will see the fix for that. I may be being to harsh here, as many people ride these skis stock and are happy with them. I have gotten into them quite hard, and expect a lot out of mine. I probobly have close to $3500.00 in aftermarket/performance parts in mine. But then I have a 3 seater that will GPS a top speed of 66 mph, and gets there very fast! If you have some time for researching, got to
click hereand do a search on power valves, pump sealing, and porpoising. If it is the straight 1200, not the 1200R, it does not have the power valves.

Re: Yamaha GP1200 comments ???

Thanks for the response. I did buy the GP1200 waverunner and it is in garaged kept excellant condition. After doing some reading on the subject, I've decided to alter the engine by going to pemix. I've ordered the oil block off kit. But, I've been reading different opinons on if going to premix requires different jetting in the carbs. I don't understand why it would need it.
Can anybody fill me in on their experience.

Re: Yamaha GP1200 comments ???

I recently took out my 1998 GP1200 and was running for about 20 minutes before all of a sudden I took a nasty spill doing about 45 mph and almost went over the front of the waverunner. But once I got back on everytime I would reach speeds of 40 mph+ the waverunner would lean a lot to the left. I can't figure out if there is a adjustment that could have been knocked out of place after my fall or if what could be wrong with it. Its to the point where you can't go any faster cause it gets too unstable. If you have any idea please reply, thanks!

I would lower the left sponson all the way down. If its all the way down now try raising the right one up and see what happens. Take a look at your ride plate too. Make sure its on tight and level.
Also check out your trim tabs, see if one has broken off or is a little out of whack from the other.

I added 4 washers to each side of my rear ride plate bolts to stop the porpoising. It rides alot better now.

be sure the pump and intake grate are tight check all the bolts sounds ilke something is loose under the ski may be why you fell in the first place.also look for hull repairs under it could be some loose fiberglass.probably not but check any way something is making it act strange.
