Hello all,

I have a 96 Yamaha Saltwater Series II 200 hp outboard w/Yamaha gauges. Right now the tachometer is working, but the tilt/trim gauge is not. What should I check to get the trim gauge working?

The other gauge which should show speed and distance traveled is not working either. Where should I look to make sure these connections are ok?

In both cases, there is power to the gauges. The trim gauge (a bar graph) always reads lowest amount of trim, the speed reads 0.0 mph (all the time) and teh trip is stuck at 0.8 miles.

Thanks for your help!

Jon

Re: Yamaha gauges not working

slapshotjh,
Not sure if the trim sender is the same as my 90 Yamaha, but if you tilt the motor up and look under to the left of the power tilt ram there may be a black plastic arm that is spring loaded. I have seen these get all corroded or salt encrusted so the stick in the down position. Try WD40 and working it back and forth until it is free. If it's really bad you may have to replace it.
The Speedo pick up I think is in the lower unit and there is a small black plastic tube that runs from there to the gauge. Mine has a inline connector around the transom area and you could firstly disconnect there and blow down the end that goes to the gauge and see if it moves. If it does your pickup may be blocked and you will have to clean it out. Sorry but I'm not sure exactly where it is on the lower unit and if you can get at it without removing the bottom end.
I'm a big believer in buying a manual for my motor which will have all this info in it for $20.
Hope this helps.
Peter

Thanks for the reply Peter. I really do need to get a manual for this motor. Where is a good place to look for it?

Re: Yamaha gauges not working

I ordered mine from the local Yamaha Dealer, but I think you can get them on this site if you go to the "Helpful Links" above and hit "Manuals"
Peter
