I recently sprayed the lower end of my 2004 F40 with Colorrite- matched paint (Spray Can). Prior to application I ruffed up the surface for paint adhesion.

After a couple of days some of the paint began to flake off right to the primary. What would of caused this?? How should this be repainted?

Thanks

Re: Yamaha F40 Painting

Hi,
When I repainted my lower unit on my Yamaha F115 4-stroke i first used wet sandpaper to get a fine surface. Then let it try. Used also slight acetone to get good adhession. Then started with spraying Evinrude Johnson Zinc Phosphate primer (it is green) and let that dry over night. Then sprayed Yamaha orginal blue metallic paint. Let it dry about 30 min. Last I sprayed with 2-coat Clear Lacquer (acryl), MOTIP, as top coat on the metallic paint.

I let it dry about 2 weeks before the boat and outboard was in water.

Seems to have worked fine.

Before I had tried Yamaha primer but did not get good results since paint did not get good adhesion. I think the Evinrude Johanson Zinc Phosphate primer was better.
