My husband is in Fanning Island and was lost at sea for a half a day with the following problem. Motor is brand new. Obvously he has no access to a dealer on any repair tools etc. so any help is appreciated. He has a sat phone and will be calling me tomorrow.
Problem with 9.9, 2009 Yamaha 4 stroke. Engine will start cold, but if it dies or is stopped it will not restart until cools down. I have tested this from overnite down to 4 hours. It will not give ANY life or pop within 4 hours. This can be hazardous when offshore blowing out to sea and nobody around!!!! Fuel looks clean, non ethanol, with Soltron additive. Never use choke. Will start cold on first or second pull.
It ran beautifully in Hawaii for about 10 hours. Arriving here it ran for a week before developing this symptom....at least 10 more hours.
It seems when it is failing to start that there is some electronic block since it will not give any sign of life....I have tried to restart at all possible throttle positions.....of course it is flooded after all of those tries, but really puzzling why it is so dead when first stalling. If I run for only a minute, I can stop and restart, not not after 2-3 min of getting warm.
Sure do hope you guys can put your thinking caps on for this one!!!!!

no thinking required,
when it fails test spark.
if if sparks fix the carb.
if it doesnt spark fix the ign system.
