I have a 2002 Yamaha F80TLRA. Single console with controls. I have a strange problem. Took it out fishing one weekend and it ran great as usual. Took it out the next weekend and it started fine at the dock. I let it idle for about 2 minutes. Got it up on plane and she stalled out. Re-started and it was idling really rough and stalled. Couldn't start it again. Used the electric to get back to the dock. Checked out any signs of obvious problems. Fuel line bubble nice and hard. Started it up and it ran smooth, used the fast idle lever to throttle up and down. Runs fine. Leave the dock and it dies, on to the trailer. At home I put the muffs on it and it starts but very rough idle, sometimes stalls and very hard to start again. I pulled the plug wires off one by one and the engine did change pitch/performance (worse) as each was disconnected leading me to believe I have spark in each cylinder. I took apart the fuel cup/filter and it was clean. I turned the motor over and in a few revolutions the cup was full. Leading me to believe the fuel pump was OK. Suddenly it is running great. Run it for awhile and all seems well. Start it again in a few minutes and it is running rough again. If you try to throttle up at all it stalls immediately. I took the bowl screws out and drained. Took the fuel line off and sprayed carb cleaner down the lines. I took the air intake off and sprayed carb cleaner directly into the throats. Put everything back together and it runs great. Turn it off and try again 1/2 hour later, running like brand new. Try it again the next day and its back to stalling and hard starting. Drain the fuel tank bone dry and refill. Check all electrical connections except for the ones under the flywheel, all good. Now it only sputters and farts. Won't idle at all. Talked to a few people and they said that if it was dirty carbs I would have noticed bad performance before total collapse. I think this may be an intermittent electrical problem. I can't get it into the Yamaha dealer because they are too busy winterizing inboards right now. They told me to bring it back in the spring. Problem is I still want to fish few a few more weeks!!!
Any ideas? I need to fish really bad !!!! :(

Re: Yamaha Dying

thats typical of carbs with debris in them.
not many issues with the F80 ign system but the only wayto test the ign system is monitor peak volts on the ign coil primary circuits when its runnig poor.

Re: Yamaha Dying

Thats what the guy told me at Yamaha. I tried the carb cleaner stuff but I guess a tear down is in order in the spring. Thanks for the reply rodbolt. :D
