Yamaha Drive Shaft Collar

I just picked up a used 2006 Yamaha 150TXR and am in the process of replacing the water pump. I've installed the plate gasket, the wear plate, impeller, and the 3 washers on the shaft, but cannot seem to get the metal collar to slip down on the plastic collar. I've been reading about installation, but it seems as though the plastic collar is too thick for the metal collar to slip over (even tried using a 7/8" wrench to force it down - no luck).
I cannot pull up of the drive shaft, as most of what I've read states that i need to do while attempting the install...
Any help is appreciated

One way is to use a crescent wrench with the jaws opened just enough to go around the drive shaft. Flats of the wrench are resting against the top of the collar. Then use a hammer to tap on the wrench to force the collar into place.

You say that the motor is a two stroke. I suspect that it is an F150. Correct?

Hey boscoe,
Thanks for the reply. I tried what you recommended, to no avail. The guy I bought the engine from threw in a parts engine, which has a model number of 150ETX something (its hard to see the last letter - I think D, based on the schematics I've been through). I looked the schematics up for that model and realize that the lower drive on that model does not use the plastic and stainless shaft collar.... So I am led to believe that what he did was... take the lower unit from the parts engine and put it on the 2006 150txr engine. Which would also make sense since when I removed the old water pump, it did not have a plastic and stainless drive shaft collar. I just figured the previous owner had a hard time installing, so left it off...

If this is the situation, is there any reason why I could not continue to use this lower unit, that may be from a different, older 150hp Yamaha?

As for your question, it is a 2 stroke oil injected. The model does not have an F before 150TXR.

You are the one in a million that correctly stated the model of his motor. Most four stroke owners never put the F in front of the HP value. I was fooled.

The Yamaha parts catalog at the Yamaha website shows the stainless collar that fits over the plastic spacer.

Ha! Thanks... I consider myself a details kind of guy.
I've seen the video from marine tech tools. But the shaft on the lower unit I have does not reduce in diameter above the impeller, so no room to "seat" the plastic and steel collars together. I think the person I bought the motor from from removed the lower unit from the parts motor and installed it on the running engine....
With that being said... It is the same shaft length (25"), and seats properly in the motor, so I assume it should be fine. unless, I am incorrect....
