Yamaha Digital Tach

I have a 1998 Saltwater Series V4 2 stroke, the tach, has lost it's brightness, and is pretty much useless, can I fix it? From what year to what year are these digital tachs interchangeable?
like, can I use a 1990 digital tach? harness still the same? I don't want to spend 350.00 for the damn thing!

the 1990 tach will work but you will have to buy the adapter.
95 and later use a square plug and 94 and earlier used a round plug.

do you know if the "multifunction" tachs will work, they are newer, mine just says TACH on it, but doesn't have the 2 buttons, like my speedo,
