I have a 97 saltwater II 200HP outboard, I am trying to replace the digital tach, the tach that needs to be replaced had the three colored indicators for oil temp ect. I was told that there was not a replacement for that older style unit? Can the gauge harness be replaced to use a newer style tach (6Y5-8350T-82-00)??

that tach will work.
look in either the 05 or 06 marine tech guide and there is a list of wich digital tachs work with which engines and which harness's will work.
but that tach is readily avalible.

Re: Yamaha digital tach 97 saltwater 200

Thanks Rodbolt..... I ended up purchasing a new tach rigging kit from the Yami dealer, New digital tach, harness, and also an adapter for under the hood, I believe he sold me the rigging kit for the 2005 and newer motors, because the engine end of the harness only has one connector. The adapter appears to make the correct conections, all the colors match up except only wire that did not match up was a black bullet connector at the engine side of the adapter, that I grounded.

The buzzer goes off constantly and the temp indicator on the tach flashes?? I am certain that it is not overheating as it is not even running. I tried disconecting the temp senders, thinking they were faulty but still get the alarm and flashing overheat indicator. Any ideas??

Thank You

Re: Yamaha digital tach 97 saltwater 200

you have something crossed.
what control box do you have?
did you set the dip switchs on the tach for two stroke,3 wire trim and 12 pole alt?
they come set 4 stroke,2 wire and 12 pole.
whats the part number of the tach and the harness.
look at page 6-25 of the 2007 marine tech guide.
