I am considering buying my first boat. I am overwhelmed with the amount of information available on motors. Will someone tell me which is better Yamaha or Suzuki. a friend says Suzuki, but many others say Yamaha is the only way to go. Please give me your opinion and if you do not mind, the reason why. Thanks for your help.

Truth of the matter is suzuki parts can be difficult to find and factory product support is poor at best.. I'm not going to comment on Yamaha.. Why not go with Mercury or John/Rude..

It would all depend on what size model, what price you pay, and your dealer service. Suzuki makes a great product.

I personally love the Yamaha's. :)

I like Merc, parts are easy to get, to me that's whats counts, when something breaks, I can get going sooner.

For what it's worth: In this part of the country, the Yamaha is the No. 1 saltwater motor, having replaced OMC several years back. Mercury is the top freshwater motor, although you see them more and more on saltwater boats in the past few years. Suzuki's are rarely seen, but I think that's more to lack of dealers than anything else. I only know one guy with a Suzuki. He likes the motor but complains of long parts delivery and astronomical costs [even for marine parts].You may want to go to the ramp where you'll be launching your boat and see what kind of motors are predominant Talk to the owners about their motors and turn up some useful local information. Good luck.

Hi Harry,
For what it is worth I owned 2 Suzukis loved them both, 0 Problems, however, at least in this part of the country dealers seem to disappear rather quickly, there were two dealers in the Erie area when I purchased mine, now there are none, nearest is about 70 miles away, no big deal, but how long will he be there? I agree with the other guys dealer support definetly is lacking. Being new at this you will want support and expertise handy. I had a devil of a time selling my Suziki motors when the time came, because of the lack of dealers and support, also, as with most if not all Japanese motors, parts are quite expensive compared to domestic products. I recently went to Mercury myself. This group has a lot of very knowledgable people that will go out of their way to give you enough information to make a decision that fits your circumstance. One other thing, take the time to chat with several dealers and other boaters in your area. Good Luck, and safe boating. :)

I just sold my 1995 Yamaha, 25hp. Best motor I ever had. Salt water and winter use for 7 years and always started on the first pull. Plenty of dealerships here in the northeast too. Although I never went to one.............
