I recently purchased a 1998 Yamaha 40 HO 2-stroke, model C40tlrx. I've taken it out two times, the first time the engine ran great. The second time I would hear a chirp while idle, but it ran great after putting it in gear and the chirp went away. I took it home and tried starting it to locate the problem. I start it up and it idles for a few seconds then I hear a chirp and it turns off. I cannot get it to continue to run at idle. I can't tell where the noise is coming from. It almost sounds like there is a rush of air which causes a whistling sound.I have a video of it running at the link below. Can anybody tell me what is causing the chirp or what I should check?

Most on here probably know more than I do, but I have specific experience with that engine, and can guess what you will be told. That is likely a lean "sneeze". The remedy, especially if you aren't sure when it was done, will be to clean the carbs, very thoroughly, then link and synch the carbs after re-assembly and make idle adjustments from there. The link and synch procedure can be a little hard to follow in some manuals, but if you don't have a manual, that's a good place to start.

Of course, the other basics will also apply..... fresh fuel, filter, etc., and spark plugs are cheap, but the carbs will be the ultimate solution.
