My trim motor is sticking so I have to tap it to get to run, time for a cleaning. I ordered a Clymers ten minutes ago and won't get it till the week end. Is this book worth the money?? Anyway my ? is to drain the hyd fluid does the motor need to be up or down as I would like to get it apart for the weekend and what kind of fluid do I use in it. Thanks for any help. My motor has the slow and fast speed cylinders.

Personally, I like the Seloc manual better. But the Clymers should be OK.

How do you plan on draining it? I don't believe that there is a drain hole anywhere. When you do work on it, you are going to have to have the motor tilted up and locked with the trailering locks. I took mine apart this year but I never fully drained it since there was no water getting in. The manual should tell you how to be sure that the system is not pressurized. You don't want to take anything apart when the system is under pressure.

You can but Yamaha trim/tilt fluid or use any automatic transmission fluid. Just don't mix them.

I need to take off the motor itself and clean the armature. When I loosened the 2 bolts that hold it down fluid started to drain out so I guess that is where I will be draining the fluid unless none is supposed to come from there.

It was probably coming out there because the system was under pressure. There is a fill hole on the resovoir side of the unit. There is also a manual relief valve located on the side of the unit, when you turn it, it releases the pressure and allows the engine to fall.

I think that if you open the fill and then turn the manual release (with the engine locked up), you will be able to push some of the fluid back into the resovoir and out the fill hole by pushing down on the tilt rods.

Quite frankly, I don't think that you need to entirely drain the unit. If you are just pulling off the motor, then you will just need to de-pressurize the system and pull off the motor. Then just fill up any fluid that you lost when taking the trim/tilt motor out.

Good luck.
