I'm looking at a boat that has a 90 HP yamaha on it. The owner got it used and doesn't know the year model. How do I tell what year it is? Also the steering cable is frozen up(won't turn), can this be loosened or just replaced, about what would that cost if I did it myself? It has been is salt water, are there any engine anodes that need to be replaced and where are they to look at? Anything else I should know about a 90 yamaha-I'm guessing a early 90's model. Thanks guys.

Re: Yamaha 90 HP questions

there is a tag on the port side bracket with the model number on it.
Once we have that info, we can help you out.

most likely, there should be a bar zinc under the motor bracket with a grounding wire attached to it. also a trim zinc.

also, the last two digits of boat serial number located on the starboard transome tells the year of the hull.

Heat and grease may loosen up the steering, however new teleflex cable systems are around $200.

Re: Yamaha 90 HP questions

if it sat long enough for the steering to stick thats usually the least of the problems.
most likly your also looking at a carb job, fuel pump, water pump(yes the go bad just sitting) t-stat and pressure control valve grommet.
occasionally the steering cable is stuck so hard I have to cut the cable and replace the steering tube and the cable.
myself I would take a mulligan unless you get to actually seatrail the rig.
there are no good deals in my industry and a free boat will be the most expensive boat you ever own.
