well after months of searching and being broke and 18 i found a guy who had an older 9.9 about 150 miles away from me i just got home and was searching all over the internet for ways of finding its year but no luck. the serial number plate is no longer on the enginge just an empty raised rectangle on the transom bracket. The engine runs good as it was well maintained most of the wires inside are brand new looking but the top cowling is a little rough around the edges but anyways i took pics of the cowling just to see if you guys can give me a general guess of its age i need to get the metal piece on the back of the cowling so it latches down. heres the pics.

Re: yamaha 9.9 just bought it

ok ive been buying like misc. parts from the 1995 motors and theyve been working but im in need of a prop shaft and i dont want to spend the money and it be the wrong part i got some numbers off the freeze plug that go 096800 thats the only numbers this engine has on it as for as serial numbers go because i contacted the older gentlemen i bought the engine from and he said he cant remember it ever having one. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated im getting kind of desperate. i haven't gotten to use the engine in a while besides the occasional start up in neutral.

is there an engine number on the block?
Dealer might help you. take the whole engine with you to a dealer. Ask politely.

You might try looking on the Yamaha parts diagram. You can look at the breakdowns and match up your motor by looking distinct difference between each. Go to http://www.partspak.com. You can look at the parts diagrams on their site and the prices are really cheap for just about any Yamaha or boat part.
