I just picked up this pretty clean Yamaha today. The guy just serviced it with new impeller, plugs, carb cleaning and lower unit oil change. It started great, shifts fine, compression good. When I got it home I couldn’t tilt it up? I assume it needs to be in forward gear? I had to reach around and push the release by hand. The lever on the side doesn’t do anything. Any chance he did something when he pulled the lower unit off?

Probably it’s just fine.
it doesn’t need to be in forward to tilt it but it’s almost not possible to tilt it up if it’s not really securely attached to a stand or a boat.

I guess I didn't spell it out right for you. If I reach around and move the piece that hooks the trim rod I can lift it right up. I'm a 280 lb guy and yes it's securely on a stand. Thanks

Oh well. Forgive me for trying to assist with only the best intentions.
I think most would have now learned a lesson on trying to help you in future....good luck with it all anyway and sorry for attempting to assist.

No worries I fixed it. I was looking for someone who knew something about this motor and obviously you don't but that's ok.

Jeez. Listen here...I have two of them in the garage. Hence the reason for trying to help. Great engines...unless they are in the hands of an idiot. All the best !
