Greetings,
I recently bought a Scout 160 with a 2007 Yamaha 50TLR, 2 stroke. When starting cold I was instructed to flip a red valve on the motor to choke. Then recently heard I could push the key in then turn it to choke and start. Does anyone have experience with cold starting a 2 stroke?
Thanks very much.

Pushing the key in would result in the same action as turning the red lever.-----But maybe the prime starter is not working.----Should be easy to check out.-----Do you hear a click when you push in the key?

2007 50TLR would have a prime start system that you do not need to do anything but turn the key to start the motor cold or warm.
the red lever needs to be set to the normal auto position for it to work properly (Full CC)

Thank you. Is there ever a time when I would need to change the position of the red lever?

only when the motor will not start due to the carb/prime start system will not get it going should you move the red lever to the open position. once motor starts you should move the red lever to the closed position.
once back to a safe place you should fix the motor properly

an owner's manual for your motor has this type of info,
and a service manual is good to have if you plan on working on it yourself

I do not hear a click when I push in the key.
And you will not hear one. No matter how good your hearing is.

The electrothermal valve in the Primestart device does not get its electrical power from the key switch.

Thank you and please continue. Until my owner's/service manual arrives I'm looking here for as much info as I can get. If a click isn't audible, is there another way of determining whether the primestart device is working?

With the red lever set to the automatic position, and the throttle handle in the idle position, if the motor does not start within several seconds of engaging the starter motor then something is amiss. More than likely the carburetor and the Primestart device need to be cleaned.

And if by turning the red lever to the ON position the motor starts quickly when it does not with the red lever in the automatic position, that is confirmation that cleaning is required.

Here is how it works.

Cold motor needs more gasoline to start. When the motor is cold the Primestart is cold also. When the Primestart is cold it provides more gasoline when in the automatic position.

When the motor starts the lighting coil provides electrical power to the electrothermal valve component on the Primestart device. As the motor warms up, the current to the valve causes it to warm up. As the electrothermal valve warms up it provides less and less extra gasoline.

When the motor is fully warmed up the Primestart is fully warmed up. In which case it stops the flow of all extra gasoline. Since none is needed.

If the red lever is turned to the ON position the Primestart device also provides extra gasoline. But at all times. Once the motor is warmed up it will run too rich. Which is why the owners manual says to turn the red lever to the OFF position after the motor has been started and is warmed up.

The motor would be then taken to a mechanics shop to be fixed. Usually by cleaning the carburetors and the Primestart device.
