Hey guys, like title says the throttle is stiff to open up. It is a “push” to increase throttle. I recently bought motor and just installed new cables. controls work freely when disconnected at engine when I hook up its somewhat stiff. Stiffness is coming from the linkage on engine. It all looks clean enough. I’m thinking it’s just the way this particular engine is. Anyone else have the Yamaha TLR with throttle that pushes toward the back to open?

How did it operate for you last season ??----Is the motor running when you shift ?-----If motor is not running have your assistant turn the prop while you slowly put it into forward then give throttle.

I didn’t use it last year, as I just bought it and just got the new cables installed and I haven’t started it yet. The initial movement
Of shift control(as it shifts out of neutral) is smooth. Maybe having it running will affect throttle, although it normally doesnt.
Will lightly oil and try it running on the next warm day. Thanks for the responses

my brothers C60 had a twisted shift shaft and bent pin thru the dog & prop shaft from someone trying to shift when not running or turning the shafts

IMO someone forced the shifter pretty hard to bend such parts. If it doesn’t slide into gear whether it’s running or not you shouldn’t force it.
Motor must be running or prop must be turned for proper operation of the control box.
I’ve shifted outboards on occasion for 45 years without prop turning or engine running, use some
Common sense, if it doesn’t slide into gear easily don’t force it and turn prop a little as you shift it.

I agree with you, but you are saying the motor is not running and you have a problem getting it into gear, so what are we suppose to think about your problem?

Nope, I must not of been clear enough, it’s a throttle issue. The first inch or so (as control moves shifter) goes easy. Then as throttle is pushed it’s somewhat stiff, much more do than the other 7-8 boats that I’ve owned. When throttle cable is unhooked from linkage at engine the control box shifts very easy. The engine throttle linkage is also stiff when the cable is removed from it. As I said previously “stiffness is from throttle on engine.” I guess it’s possible that the engine running will somehow decrease the stiffness of throttle. I’ve never had that happen with the other 10-12 engines I’ve had or repaired. But, the only Yamahas I’ve had were tiller models and I don’t think I’ve had a “push to open “ throttle before.
Thank you for taking time to try to help

sorry about that I thought you were talking about shifting.
Could the new cable be in too tight of a bend at the motor when hooked up?
I have run into that before

I don’t think so, because when I disconnected the plastic cable ends, I left the cables attached to the lower cowling and with the same bend as when they were attached. As I said, with cables unhooked from motor, the linkage on motor is stiffer than the others that I have owned. Maybe it’s just a Yamaha thing or a “Yamaha push throttle thing”. It’s tolerable, but it’s much stiffer than the Mercs, Johnsons and Evinrudes that I have owned.

Looking at the picture you provided, it seems that your throttle linkage is wrong.
With the carb butterfly's shut, the pointer on the CDI, should be pointing to I, not II.
If you continue to push the throttle open beyond that point, you are in danger of shagging your CDI (££££!).

The motor did start up, idle and accelerate good at the dealer where I bought it. The cdi or linkage has not been moved since.

is there any bad bends in the route of the cable ?
Not really, it does look like they gave me the wrong plastic cable connector when I bought the motor and controls. Parts diagrams show a slightly different style. Will let you guys know after I receive and install it. Thanks

The parts diagram shows an odd, offset connector, only cost $8.00 and hopefully it will help a little
