i have a 98 yamaha 50 hp 4 stroke. the other day the oil light was flickering just a bit, checked the oil, seemed thin so, i changed the oil. also, put in a new sending unit. took it out for a spin yesterday.. all seemed fine for probably 4 miles at 4k rpm..
stopped for an hour or so..
storm started to roll in so i hi tailed it back to the boat ramp (or tried).. ran about 4500 rpm for probably 3 minutes.. light and buzzer came on, i shut it off.. waited a minute, started back up, light stayed off for a minute, came back on and engine started to knock instantly.. i didnt have a choice but to idle the boat for less than 2 minutes with the light on and knocking due to the storm, wind and unbelieveable rain to get to the dock..
loaded it on the trailer, brought it home.. let it sit for a couple hours.. connected the flusher to it to see what it sounded like now that it had cooled..
started up, sounded fine for about 1 minute, then the lite came back on and started knocking again..
whats the chances its only an oil pump?? or is the bearings toast also..??
