I have a Renken 260 classic with a 5.7 V8. I now know that I bought a "lemon." I have two questions if anyone can help me.
1. There is too much play between the steering lever and the upper pivot shaft. The outdive flops back and forth about 10-15 degress underway, making steering difficult. Are there any quick fixes to this problem? I'm considering drilling and installing a set screw in the lever through the trim and tilt switch hole.
2. Can anyone recommend a replacement outdrive that would match up with the engine?

Re: Yamaha 5.7 Outdrive

Its the steering arm that worn and just sold the last new one in the free world. Anyway, in order to repair it properly, you would have to remove everything out of the boat including the transom assembly to replace it. I would attempt what you are speaking of. I've seen customers cut holes in the rear of the transom assembly and do the same and weld a plate over the hole. What has happened is the tiller arm has a square hole that the pivot shaft goes thru and the corners of the cast iron arm rounds out and gives you that slop. The stainless pivot shaft is seldom damaged.

Capt Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I once read where you replaced these units with mercruisers. If I decide to do this, What size, shape and model would be appropriate for the engine (V8 5.7).
Can you recommend any repair shops in the Virginia beach area? Any help would be appriciated. Ed

Re: Yamaha 5.7 Outdrive

Don't know any mechanics up yonder. You have a choice of either the 5.0 mpi @260 hsp or the carb'ed 5.7 @ 250 hsp. Use to get some good deals on new Mercruiser packages when Stewart Stevenson had the distributorship in the southeast, now that Land and Sea has it, its hard to get any good prices. The prices to dealers went up around a grand per package. Lost some repower deals I had going at the time due the price changing.
