I've just bought a boat with a Yamaha 2 cylinder 40HP outboard Model No 6E9 Serial No: L400225 and there is also a Q on the plate. i have been led to believe that this is a 1982 model. I have tried to buy a workshop manual and my Yamaha dealer can only supply me with a manual covering all models from 1984. They say all other manuals have been discontinued.

Does anyone know whether the 40HP changed much between 1982 and 1984, and, if so, were the differences major? i.e. Should I buy this manual?

Re: Yamaha 40 Model Differences

I've got a 40hp 2-cyl Yam 1990 vintage. It's model designation is QE (E for Electric). When the engine was bought new (in UK) it was called an Origin as it was low tech with no oil injection. I'd be very suprised if there is much difference between my 1990 and your engine. Outboards do not get much more basic than these. I have contacted Yamaha UK's technical dept several times and have found them very helpful so it might be a good idea to give them a call.

Cheers

Thanks Andy, I think you're right about it being basic - I was in Sudan a few years ago and they had loads of these - simple and nothing fancy to break down because you can't get spares down there. I'll try ringing Yamaha - Don't suppose you can give me a number or anything - the website deosn't seem to have any contact details.

Martin

The number on their outboard brochure is 01932 358000. Ask for Marine technical.

I have been very pleased with my engine. It hasn't been particulary well looked after but starts on the button. I've had an on going problem with my overheat buzzer going off, which I have finally fixed by buying a 2nd new thermo sensor. This was after reading on this board that even new ones can be faulty. Seems to have done the trick. Best of luck with your engine.

Just remembered that when I bought my workshop manual I had the option to return it for a refund if I wasn't happy. I can't remember who I got it off though. I have used BHG Marine ( Bucklers Hard Marine) recently for parts and they have been first class. Mega efficient and helpful with the part arriving the next day if ordered in the morning. Way better than my local Yamaha dealer. I think they would be happy to refund.

Cheers

Andy

Re: Yamaha 40 Model Differences

Thanks again Andy. I've contacted Yamaha and they assure me that there are minor, if any differences, so i'm picking up the manual this morning.

As for the engine, I bought the Rib, trailer and engine for £1200 so expected the engine to be a bit of a dog. It's a beauty. Starts first time, ticks over lovely without oiling up and sips fuel (my last was a 70HP Johnson). I'm blissfully happy - hence the manual. I want to keep it sweet.

Once again, THanks for your help.
