Can someone explain Yamaha's foray into i/o market for me.

Did they build a 4.3 motor? Is it a Chevy based motor or their own? Opinions on the motor?

My understanding is their outdrive....well...stank.

Are parts available or unsupported? I've read the bolt pattern may be the same as an Alpha drive, is this correct?

What I'm getting at is there is a Cobalt that I'm interested in. The dealership is rebuilding the outdrive at the moment. Hmmm....

Yamaha 4.3 is the same as the Volvo & Mercury motor all bought from GM

Re: Yamaha 4.3

if yer thinkin about buying a yamaha i/o.
i would think again. unsupported would be a reasonable assessment. they only dabbled in i/o's for a few years from what i understand...
another way i'd say it would be that i'd take a mercruiser 470 version engine prior to a yamaha. and when i was buying, a mercruiser 470 version engine was on my no look at list because of it's known issues..

the 4.3 would be a chevy engine. marinized by yamaha. again, unsupported short of the chevy engine parts...

You would take a 470 over a Yamaha....that says something.

That's kind of what I was getting at. The 470 has some known issues, but does the Yamaha? or is mostly that they were involved with this set up for such a short while the effort on their part was 1/2 hearted?

only because i'd think there were more of them made, + at least somewhat better support and parts availability. nla parts could really bum a fella out..

how many threads do we see regarding the 470 version engine? quite a few. folks do have them. there is conversation between folks as to how to fix their particular issue. now how many threads do you see regarding yamaha i/o's? not so many. + there's only a hand full of folks on this board that are hip to how to deal with the yamaha.

imho...

I agree....and hence the question.

I wasn't sure if the limited information was mostly due to the limited amount of Yamaha i/o's out there or that maybe their conversions were not all proprietary to Yamaha.
