Yamaha 3.0 I/O dies when put in gear.

I run a Yamaha 3.0 stern drive, inline 4 cylinder, 10 year owner. Most of the time when i put it in forward gear the engine will die, sometimes it dies when i put it in reverse. After starting several times (5), the engine will not die when I engage into forward and i can go. I have tried adjusting the linkage to the the shifter, and idle speed. Is there a switch that could possibly be worn out or could it be the carb. Im definitely not a mechanic, but it seems to be something electrical. It started doing this after i replaced the manifold gasket couple years ago. I had to pull the carb. when i did it. Hope someone can help. Thanks Paul

Could be several things Whiteboy. Dang it feels odd saying that. The end of the shift cable is very soft and can be easily bent. If you bent it while working on the manifold, you can straighten it out with your fingers. Doesn't take much. If that isn't the problem, then the lower shift cable or the shift fork on the outdrive is stiff. The only way to tell which, is to remove the outdrive. This has to be a fresh water unit for it to still be around.

Yes it is a fresh water unit. In 92 when i bought it i thought that Yamaha was the way to go. So in your opimion it is the shifting system, right?

Which end of the shift cable were you refering to when you said i could straighten it out, the motor end or the handle end? Motor end is ok far as i can tell . Is there anyway i can (unstiffen) the lower shift cable without pulling the lower unit? How big of a deal is it to pull the lower unit? Thanks Paul

The engine end is the one I was talking about. It doesn't take much of a bend to warp it and make it stiff to shift. If not that, then remove the rams, six bolts on the outdrive and slide it off. Then you will be able to tell if its the cable or the shift fork on the drive.
