YAMAHA 250 Oil Injection Problem

I have a '93 Yamaha 250 with a problem with my oil injection system. I believe it is something to do with my pump on the aux. tank or the float sensor in the small tank under the cowl. Anyhow, for some reason I get a low oil alarm after some time of running, and have to the small tank up manually about every ten miles of running. This occurs after about a 1/3 of the oil has been used from the aux. tank, and it then for some reason doesn't pump any more oil to the small tank, causing this alarm to constantly go off. I have checked the flow on the pump and it is just a little more than a fast dribble. I dunno if this is normal or not? One theory I have is that the pump is worn out and can't pump fast enought to keep up or the lines are gunked up. The second theory I have is the oil float sensor under the cowl. The float that controls the alarm is obviously working, but the upper float doesn't seem to turn the oil pump when when it contacts the metal ring on the pole. I have only tried this with the key "on" not with the motor running. Does anyone know if the motor has to be running for this to work?? This is what I plan to experiment with tomorrow. Any one with similiar problems or that might know somehting, please advise. You would be a great help, THANKS!

Re: YAMAHA 250 Oil Injection Problem

I'm having a problem understanding your post but I will try to explain the system. The Aux tank in the boat will transfer oil to the main tank when the sensor on the main tank tells it to. If the Aux tank gets to about a third full, the transfer will stop and yellow alarm light will come on. You will get the red light and alarm when the main tank gets low. You then have to use the manual fill toggle switch on the engine to fill the main tank then. The engine does not have to be running for this to happen but the key does need to be on. This system keeps one from running the engine till its out of oil. There is enough oil left in the Aux tank for two refills of the main tank in this instance. To check the system, you would need to pull the sensor out of the tank to see if the alarm light is working properly and the yellow light is coming on. Then you would need to check to see if the float sensors in the main tank are working. The pump in the Aux tank does not pump real fast. Just a slow dribble but is enough to keep the tank full when everything is working properly.

chec the small inline oil filter on the oil line coming out of the boat oil tank. it is behind the bracket near the bottom of the tank. also check to make sure there are no kinks or over tight tie straps on the hose leading to the engine.
