hi, just looking for some help, until recently my Yamaha 225 was running a dream i then pulled out one of the wired to the oil tank when moving it around to fill, so i disconnected the battery to be safe when i was reconnecting (connection was broken so i was soldering a new one on) it, but when i went to start the motor again it wouldn't start and i lost power trim and tilt. the engine would short. i am able to reset the short by disconnecting the battery but as soon as i do anything (like try and start or use the trim) it shorts again. i replaced the starter relay as that is what sounded like was shorting and no luck, i am able to bypass the relay and jump the starter motor and the engine runs fine, i have not tried to use trim while the engine is running but. i have checked all obvious fuses and the wiring appears to be fine. just a little stumped and any advice would be appreciated. the engine was a great engine up to this point.

you might need to explain what you mean by the engine would short

a short is where wiring is shorted / touching together of bear wires ( bad insulation) causing excess current to flow through wiring blowing fuses and/or burning up wiring.

What you have described sounds like a bad connection at battery(inside or out),battery cables, or other connections.
Take apart and clean all and try again.
You could find where the problem is with a voltage drop load test, but my bet is you do not know how to do that. So just clean things up and see it that fixes it.
load test battery if all else does not do any good.
I have found battery cables that went bad internally, but that is rare

It ran fine until you pulled out one of the wires to the oil tank to fill it.

You soldered on a new connection, and it doesn't work any more.

Did you solder it correctly, or disconnect anything else, or change anything else.

You say you have a short, did you put the wires back the same way, bare wires touching metal?

Whats different, it worked great before you worked on it.
