Might be wrong, but I’m not sure a faulty rectifier would produce more volts as a failing. Sorry to ask, but have you verified this using a meter on the actual battery ? Or are you going by the readout on the dash ?

HAD A VOLT METER ON BATTERYS PLUS MY CHART PLOTTER SHOWS VOLTAGE dash meter starts flashing after it gets to 15.5 like it telling me something is wrong. at idle is 13.5 at 3500 16.2 Had a used motor put on a few days ago and that's when it started trying to get my rectifier off old motor had no problem with that one? Thanks

Ah. Fair play. Sounds like it’s a genuine over voltage then. Got you. So you must have a combined regulator/rectifier type on your engine. Sounds like you know what you have to do then.

I would take apart and clean all the connections from the battery to the motor. A loose or faulty connection in the system can cause high voltage. I had the same problem last year and found the negative post connection was loose. A 15 minute job and no dollars spent.
