Yamaha (2000) VMax 150 - Remote oil pump?

Hi...

I've been reading a lot of the posts on this site, trying to narrow down my problem. Taking the advice I've found here, I think I've narrowed the problem.

Yamaha DX 150 VMax (circa 2000) stopped sending oil to the engine mounted reservoir. Large tank in the boat has plenty of oil in it, but the little 'un on the engine runs out, horn goes off and power drops. The manual switch on the back does nothing...I can't even hear the pump running (key on, key off, engine tilted down, up...whatever). When this happens, I'm forced to pour oil directly into the little reservoir on the engine.

I pulled the remote oil tank out and I've checked the power (brown wire) to the harness at the remote tank with a DMM and get a full 12+ volts (key on). I've used jump wires from the battery to the pump side of the harness and get nothing; no sound, no oil...nothin.

So I'm guessing it's the pump. Is there something else I should check? If not, is the pump a big deal to change out? It doesn't look like it (except for one stripped screw head some genius left me), but are there any particular tricks to it?

And where's the best place to get one? Interestingly, I've searched the internet for an oil pump for this motor and get suprisingly few hits. Maybe I'm using the wrong terms or something...

Thanks in advance.

ya think????

you may actually wish to quit the ebay shirt and buy the correct manuals.
you may also wish to figgue out how to Identify your engine.
V max model numbers start with a V
D models are twin props.
thats why all I ever ask is simply post the model number and we are all happy and playing from the same book.
the remote oil pump is a simple DC electric pump, as long as it has 12V on one side and a ground path on the other its runs.
with the key on can you manually transfer oil?

So Rodbolt...I'm not sure what you're so snarky about. The manual says DX150Y. The Invoice (Purchase Agreement) says DX150Y. The cowling says VMax. If you don't have enough info to answer my questions I'll be happy to provide more, so just ask.

But what's with the attitude? I've never posted here before and did so because I'm looking for some help. I tried to provide enough information so someone would know what I'd done so far and what I was trying to determine. How did I get on your wrong side doing that? Or is this your good side?

And (as I said in my first post) I don't get any oil transfer with the key on.

Oh yeah; what's with the "...quit the Ebay shirt..." comment? I don't even understand what you mean.

As for manuals, I don't have any yet. I've got some ordered, but they're not here.

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha (2000) VMax 150 - Remote oil pump?

sorry if I get snippy
look at the plate on the port transom bracket, post the complete model number.
the problem I have is there is a seal between the filter screen in the engine tank and the tank, most folks and more then one tech doesnt know its there and they get pushed into the oil line to the engine pump and can burn up a powerhead.
also any debris on the engine tank bottom falls directly into the oil pump feed line when you remove the screen without draining the tank via the water trap at the bottom/
if its a DX motor it should be a 2.6L motor.
to access the the remote tank pump simply remove the tank from its holder, cut the tie straps on the hoses and pull out the pump. we dont see many pump failures so carefully test for any bad connections.
the E-bay comment was because the past few weeks we have seen folks buying junk off ebay and then bringing it in.
so far I have not seen anything worth buying that was bought on ebay including a supposed MIE 260 Mercruiser package, guy bought it, brought in in for service and its not only a sterndrive engine its also junk.

the brown wire at the pump will be 12V any time the key is on, the blue wire is the ground path and is completed either by commands from the ECU or by the manual toggle switch.
will also be a good time to replace the remote oil tank filter, pay close attention, even make a diagram, of the hose routing at the remote tank. improper routing on reassembly can cause a line to be pinched and a no oil flow isue.

Rodbolt...

Thanks for the quick replies and the help.

Here's what I can make out on the plate (it's really hard to read):

Astro
815100-0C20
12V 20
==> 23
For Engine Oil Only

I've already got the remote tank pulled out of the bilge. Once I cut the tie straps on the hoses, will the pump just pull out?

In another thread about something similar, you (I think) mentioned testing the pump at the "bullet" connectors. What and where are those? Are they accessible once the pump's off the tank?

Well, my plan is to try to pull that pump and test it with some jumpers off a 12V source. I've tried it at the harness, but maybe I can somehow test it right at the pump itself.

Thanks again, Rodbolt.

Re: Yamaha (2000) VMax 150 - Remote oil pump?

Fixed.

It was the pump. After disconnecting the hoses, the pump still wouldn't come out! I had to use a pair of channel locks on it, twisting and pulling until it finally gave up and I was able to work it out. Put the new pump in and it fired right up.

Turns out the housing of the pump had a rusted out hole the size of a quarter in the side of it.

Thanks for your help.
