Please Help. I need a Yamaha Guru's synopsis of the following:

My '92 Yamaha 200 (V6) has always run great until last weekend.

Here's the skinny: I put only about 40 to 60 hours a year on it, except last year I only ran it a few hours. (newborn baby took precendence : )

It's not a had a tune-up since the yeat before last.

As I came into the slip last Saturday, the idle was sporatic and then it cut off and would not restart. When it finally restarted the idle remained shakey (up and down).

The engine will now only run about 30 sec's and then cut off. It usually idles at 550 rpm as smooth as silk. When I try to take it out and open the throttle to blow things out, it hesitates and cuts off to the point that its not practicle or safe.

Today with no luck, i perfromed basic tune-up steps below (i'm not a mechanic) to remedy the problem:

1-Pulled fuel filter at engine and cleaned it out. (It was as clean as a whistle even before I unscrewed it.)

2-Replaced fuel filter can on transom with new one to OEM spec from NAPA. (Took filter and contents to yatch club mechanic who said the gas inside it "did not smell varnished and looked ok". All 93 gallons in my tank are between 1 month and 18 months old. I always keep it topped off to prevent condensation. I never put gas stabilizer or other additives in it.)

3-Replaced all 6 plugs with OEM specified new ones with proper gap.( 039 is spec )

4-Cranked engine and it ran the same... very badly and almost like is not firing on all 6 cylinders.

5-I checked for spark on each plug wire by taking an old spark plug and connecting each of the 6 wires to it one by one and cranking it a few sec's. All 6 coils and wires were firing.
(... and yes, I grounded the test plug metal base to the engine block with a cooper wire instead of holding it with my hands. At age forty, I've finally come to my senses)

5-Next, I pulled the air intake cowling off of the Carbs and cleaned each of the 6 out with NAPA Carb and Choke Spray. I cleaned the jets by bending the red tube into a 90 degree shape. I opened the butterfly and sprayed each thoroughly around the choke system and hi/low jets (the best I could reach them)

6-I allowed five or ten minutes for the cleaner to break any gunk up and resprayed everything and then waited another 5 minutes.

7-I primed the engine , sprayed a touch of starter fluid into the carbs and hit the start button...engine started but ran the same as in steps 1 and 4... very badly and almost like is not firing on all 6 cylinders.

***

That's about the depth of my knowledge. At this point its academic and a learning experience.

Does anyone have any pointers? If so, please share with me.

Please advise.

Best Regards to all,
One sick Yamaha puppy

TO fix the problem, my mechanic had to pull the carbs and de-gum them. Also, I had to pump the entire tank's fuel, as it was old. In addition, one of the fuel pumps was not outputing enough gas , so it was replaced.

It runs like a new now! Cuddos to Jim at Ocean Marine Yatch Center (OMYC)...

Happy 4th to all and see you on the water.

-ReelTime
