yamaha 15sh shifter problems

we are working on the water pump of one my students outboards. while changing the water pump after reinstalling everything it would not shift out of forward so we took the lower unit off to move the shifter to correct this problem but can get the shift linkage to move in any direction. so my question is how do i get it unstuck from forward gear.

remove the propshaft and bearing carrier,reset the shift rod, install new seals and orings on the carrier and reinstall.
someone pulled the shift rod up and its disengaged the cam follower.

yeah mines doing the same thing but how do you get the prop shaft off and get to the part where u reset the rod

same as the other post,with a yamaha shop service manual and the correct tools.
