Hi, I have just bought a 1997 Yamaha 15hp four stroke engine as a non-runner and have found it has no spark at either plug. Are there any common faults with these units or is it time to buy a manual and start fiddling. Money is tight at the moment with another baby on the way so can't afford a dealer, please help...:^

can ya post a model number? I dont list an F15 in 97 for the US market.
however follow the white lead into the CDI and unplug it and retest for spark, this will by pass the ign stop circuit.

Hi, model number is F15AMHS and the serial number is 000444. There is another label on the transom mount which has the number 66M-82 1997. Hope this helps. I have tried cranking the engine with the white lead disconnected and still no spark so I guess the kill switch is not the problem...

that number doesnt correspond to anything in the US market.
I have no way of verifying the ign system.
most likly either the stator inputs or the charge coil inputs failed. a bad ign coil is possible if it has a siamese coil. most can be tested with an ohm meter and service manual.

If it helps at all, the engine appears to be identical to the American 1998 F15MSHW. The engine has a single coil supplying both plugs.:/
