Does anyone have any time on this new motor yet? I'm thinking of ordering a couple. Thanks.

Looks real good on paper Forktail, but it is also still several Gs over the Suzi DF140.

Good luck. :)

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Hi,
Yamaha F150: Still unproven over longer periods of use (by customers). But it is probably a very good outboard. At least on paper it is a dream machine 4-stroke in the 150 hp class.

BUT: it is much more expensive then Suzuki DF140/Johnson 140 4-stroke and they are proven technology by now since they have been on market for several years. You will pay alot of $ extra for only 10 hp more...

Anyway, I have a Yamaha F115 (2003) myself and like it much, and I would not hesitate to try a Yamaha F150 if I had the money despite You have to be almost a tester since it came out on market not long ago.

Be safe: Select a Suzuki DF140/Johnson 140 4-stroke.
Get (probably) the best (and most expensive?) outboard in this class (140-150 hp): select the Yamaha F150. Assuming it has no "hidden" faults not discovered yet by users...

Note: I belive Honda has also a new BF150 to be released soon? Maybe check out that also before You decide.
http://world.honda.com/news/2003/p030731.html
Quick tested here:
http://www.trailerboats.com/site_page_1480/article_page_212.html
(they write they plan to test Yamaha F150 next month)

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

I am putting a Yamaha F150 on my new rig. to the tune of $2500 more than the 115 hp. This includes the Yamaha multi function guages. I have heard of and talked to many satisfied owners of the 115 and have the understanding the 150 is the same inline 4 cyl. technology with more displacement for the extra 35 ponies. When considering alternatives, the dealer (also a Johnson and Suzuki dealer) advised me that Johnson and Suzuki 140's use the same powerhead as their 115hp models but with modified fuel delivery systems to get the 140hp.

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Thanks. :) But actually I don't need help deciding which outboard to get. I was just wondering if anyone is running these yet, and if they like them. If everything looks good, I'm planning on upgrading a pair of my 3,000 hour F115's for some new F150's in the spring. ;)

"...it is also still several Gs over the Suzi DF140."

JB, where are you getting your price information from? I'm only looking at a little over $1,000 difference? Not bad considering how much more motor you're getting (162 cubes vs. 125 cubes).

The Honda BF150 was the heaviest....and over $13,000! Just doesn't make sense.

I'm more interested in any bugs that might be surfacing since it's a new model. Although in the past, I've found Yamaha's new year models to be flawless. ;)

I was comparing actual selling price, Forktail, not MSRP.

Perhaps I should have said you would have a hard time getting a significant discount.

I think you should also consider new (for model year 2004) models from Honda (BF 135 and BF 150).
I think that Yamaha F150 will be better engine than Suzuki DF140 (better fuel economy, lower weight...). The only question is it worth of extra money. It is clear where it goes. Every new engine is more and more expensive. For the price of for example Honda BF225 or Yamaha F 225 you can buy brand new Mercedes-Benz in Europe.

Forktail: The cost difference in $1000 vs. the Suzuki DF140? Not in New England it isn't. I couldn't find a price under $13,900 (w/o gauges & install). Also, a huge issue is the Yamaha 150 Four Stroke is allocated until March 2004!!!

I'm buying the Suzuki DF140 for $9200.00 w/ SS prop & controls & this includes installation! I can't see spending that much more coin for the Yamaha. Just my 2 cents worth.

Alex

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Easy guys....it’ll be Yamaha’s on the boat. I just wanted to know if anyone is running one of these yet?

Price isn’t the issue for me, but I'm not sure where some of you are getting your pricing info? I can order the pair of F150’s for under $20,000. My commercial guide price was $10,200 each, and the dealer reduced it further for twins. It turned out being $9950 each. The best I could do on the Suzuki DF140 was $8750 each. Again, there's a major difference in these two outboards (125 cubes vs. 162 cubes, 10 hp, etc.), especially for a little over a grand. I really don't see what benefit the DF140 has over the F150, even in price.

FWIW, retail on the Yamaha up here was $11,335. $10,300 for the Suzuki. Also a difference of about a grand.

Allocation isn’t an issue for my high volume dealer. He'll have them. Besides, I don’t need the outboards until spring...and I can always keep running the F115’s until they arrive.

Again, I’m looking for input from someone running this outboard. Thanks. :)

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Forktail: For all my praise for the Suzuki DF140, I bought a Honda BF150 (V-Tec) today. The more I thought about it, I had concerns with the output of the DF140 (2044cc) vs. Honda's (2354cc) Yes, the Honda weights in @ 478 lbs. vs. 421 lbs. (57 lbs. difference)

It just seems like the Suzuki is 140 HP @ 6000-6200 RPM. Makes me worry about pushing the engine thus shorting it's lifespan. My wife has a Honda CRV & it's now our 3 car. It has 125,000 miles on it, the car runs like a charm! We don't want to sell it because there's no reason to. Good luck with your purchase decision.

Regards,

Alex

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Thanks Alex. Congrats on the new Honda. :)

The Yamaha F150 is 2670 cc That's 12% more displacement than the Honda and 23% more displacement than the Suzuki/Johnson. That's significant IMO. Plus it's lighter and cheaper than the Honda.

The only decision I have is whether or not to leave the F115's on until the F150 gets some history, or just go for it. Hopefully by spring we'll have some input from owners down south running the F150's. Let us know how that new Honda works out.

It's funny, were a HUGE fishing & pleasure boating seacoast community & there's no Yamaha dealer! Go figure.

Also, Eastern Boats (that's the new boat I'm buying) is a Honda dealer so it just easier to package it up in regards to the loan. I did get a couple of quotes & the prices were about the same (al least here) for both the Honda BF150 & the Yamaha F150. I paid $12,795.00 w/ all the controls/gauges & installation. I hefty price tag on the Honda. I'm sure she'll be kind to me. I'm confident the Yamaha will be a gem for you aswell. If you really think about it, all the Japanese engines are well made & reliable. I'll check back once the Spring comes back to us in New England.

Alex

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Forktail, I'm looking at getting a 150 HP Yammy 4-stroke too, but I want a 4-blade, 18 pitch SS prop for it. I'm looking at putting the motor on a Triumph 210 CC.

Even Yamaha's website is unclear as to which props fit the new 150 four stroke - is it the same lower unit as the 200/225 HP 4-stroke??

Thanks

Re: Yamaha 150 hp 4-stroke....

Good question.

The F150 does run different gearing than the F200/225, but it ends up with the same ratio. Not sure if it's a different case, etc or not.

I do see they list the Performance Series 4 S/S prop as an option. Of course, you always have aftermarket.
